How to Replace an Audi G28 Engine Speed Sensor
In this video Charles the humble mechanic demonstrates how to replace the G28 engine speed sensor. This sensor is located at the top of the transmission above the flywheel ring gear. It sends a message to the ECU through an uncolored wire T55/49, then to the tachometer on the instrument cluster.
1. Engine Speed Sensor
The grey wire is situated on the outside of the transmission, directly above the flywheel ring. This sensor sends a signal via the grey wire to pin T55/49. The ECU utilizes this information to regulate the amount of fuel and boost. It also sends signals to the G5 tachometer inside the instrument cluster.
The sensor is used to connect with the G40 Camshaft position Sensor. The ecu must know when the crankshaft is TDC and where the camshaft is located so that it can activate spark and injectors according to the situation.
If this sensor fails to function, the ECU will display a P00160 error code. This indicates that the Crank Shaft is not in alignment with the Intake Camshaft. It could also be a sign of a chain stretch or a jumpy chain link in the upper chain of timing. However, the code won't appear on its own without additional information from other sensors (G4 and G40).
Testing is a bit tricky as there are two different connector pins and they have different functions but the best method to test it is to measure resistance between the sensor and the ECU. It should read around 1000 ohms when it is operating at its maximum. Examine for signs of coolant, or oil in the connector bay if there are issues with this part.
2. Injectors
Yesterday, when i was accelerating to the fullest speed from highway paytoll, I experienced massive power loss like the engine is running out of gas or injectors are not firing at all. Today, i pulled out the spark plugs, 3 were soaked with gazoline and the 4th one was dry. When I start the engine, there are no sparks i put tissue on the top of each hole in the injector, the 3 drenched with gazoline pop out, but the 4th stays closed. I tested the ground connection on ECU pins 14/55/30/55/48/55/14/55/48/ i get zero ohm. I think the issue is elsewhere.
I also tried to reset the PID but with no luck. The car will start when the G28 is unplugged, and it works fine when the G28 plugged in. However, the intermittent misfire problem persists at higher RPM. The temperature sensor for coolant (G62) shows the wrong temp value -49c even when get more info i unplug it. I also noticed that the oil gauge in the cockpit shows 2 bar while the actual pressure is 0.
I'm not sure what to do, as i think i've pretty much eliminated everything else. However, i'm afraid that i might have missed something. If anyone has any suggestions, please chime in! TIA!
3. Fuel Pump
The fuel pump of the g28 gets a signal from the RPM sensor. The GM-style transmitter is the same as the G4 and both are used in the 80 100 200, UrS and RS2 cars which is why you can easily locate one at a junkyard or at a parts store. It is simple to test them: simply put your DMM into resistance mode and determine the distance between pins 1 and 2 (with the bump on the connector's edge facing upwards). They must be infinite Ohms.
4. ECU
The ECU of our 20vt turbo (3B AAN ABY) engines must be aware of the position and speed of the crankshaft to determine timing of fuel injectors, etc. It makes use of a Crank Position Sensor G4 and an Engine Speed Sensor G28 to accomplish this. If either of these sensors go badly, you will see codes on the diagnostic scanner that could cause engine shut down.
Some of the symptoms of a malfunctioning G28 sensor include an inaccurate rev counter for the gearbox the gears are shifting faster than normal and/or a misfire when you're in gear. If you have any of these issues, it is likely that your sensor is going bad and requires replacement. They're inexpensive and easy to locate especially if they're a Bosch model like ours. Alternatively, the GM version of this component is also a good option.
5. Tachometer
A faulty engine speed sensor could be the cause of a read more slew of issues in your car. It is an important part of the transmission of your Audi because it relays information to the ECU regarding how fast or slow the engine of the car is spinning. If this sensor fails, it will cause problems for the transmission as well as the other car's components.
The G5 engine speed sensor is located on the outside of the transmission, above the flywheel ring gear and sends a signal to the ECU at pin T55/49 through an uncolored wire. The ECU uses this signal to control fuel and boost, and also timig. It also sends it to the G5 audi a5 replacement key Tachometer located in the instrument cluster. You can check for sensor failure by examining the continuity of the sensor to the tachometer. Additionally, you can examine the continuity between pins T55/49 of the ECU and pin T6a/1 of the instrument cluster (trace [79trace [79]), and between pin T6a/1 and pin spare audi key T26a/12. It should show approximately 1000 ohms resistance between those two pins. This is the same across the Audi 80-100-200-RS2 model, ranging from the 1985 MC up to the 1997 UrS AN and the 1995 RS2 DU read more So, you may find them in wrecking yards.
